Voters backed Marxist coalition leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, rejecting an old guard accused of leading the country into economic crisis.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake was sworn in as Sri Lanka's ninth president, promising to bolster the economy and fight corruption. Dissanayake, leader of the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna party, defeated Sajith Premadasa in the recent election.
