Leading chipmaker Nvidia and SoftBank Corp , the telecommunications arm of SoftBank Group , have piloted the world's first artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G telecoms network, the two companies said on Wednesday.

SoftBank Group Corp. will be the first Nvidia Corp. customer to build a supercomputer based on the chipmaker’s new Blackwell design, a move to meet growing demand in a country eager to catch up in artificial intelligence.

SoftBank Group is the first customer to use Nvidia's Blackwell chips, which will be used to develop an artificial intelligence supercomputer in Japan. The companies plan to build the system — which they call Japan's most powerful supercomputer — in early 2025.

Huang was speaking at Nvidia’s AI Summit in Tokyo where he also announced several AI collaborations with Softbank.

CEO Jensen Huang said at an event in Tokyo that Japanese investment giant SoftBank was once the largest shareholder of Nvidia Corp. Both companies now plan to collaborate in the AI industry.
