The Swannanoa River may be receding, but it’s miraculous how far the flood waters reached out of its banks in Asheville.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Around four days after Hurricane Helene swept through Asheville, business owners in the Biltmore Village area are working to rebuild. One business owner, Sam Souhaim, said he lost around $350,000 worth of merchandise swept away by the flooding. That number also doesn't include the cost of damage to the building.

Nearby Historic Biltmore Village, a walkable mixed-use community with shops, restaurants, and residences, has suffered catastrophic damage. Images show that much of the area was underwater, with downed trees, overturned vehicles, and impassable roads.

Biltmore Village in Asheville should evacuate ahead of Helene making landfall. Now, the area is experiencing historic flooding thanks to Helene and is largely underwater. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration,
