Mayor Brandon Johnson is asking businesses to offer up new violent crime response tools just as his administration ends the ShotSpotter police technology deal, and the controversial outgoing vendor intends to throw its hat in the ring to continue operating in Chicago.

CHICAGO (CBS) — ShotSpotter is now offline in Chicago. The gunshot detection system stopped sending data to police at 12:01 a.m. Monday—all despite a monthslong fight to keep the technology in the city.

Hours before Chicago’s use of the ShotSpotter gunshot-detection system was decommissioned, the mayor’s office announced a formal request for companies to submit information on replacement technology and said a group of both city and non-city employees has been working for months on developing alternative options.
